Madrid -eats and drinks

There is no better way to experience a new city than through it’s food. And when you are eating, you have to have a drink to really complete the experience, right? We agree – so here are our favorite places to partake in a lunch and a libation from our recent trip to Madrid.

Eats

Entre Suspiro y Suspiro

Entro Surpriso

We quite literally stumbled on this spot when we were nearing dangerous HANGRY levels. And crazy enough, it’s an Amazing Mexican restaurant! Yes, Mexican food in Spain – seems wrong but it’s oh-so-right!  Small plates, a little on the pricier side, but totally worth it. They have a great selection of flavored margaritas – even rare flavors like tamarind and jalapeno.

La Buha Tortilla Espanola 2

Go here for HUGE tortilla espanola! Located in the Chueca district, they have more varieties than we have ever seen! We enjoyed a caramelized onion and mushroom as well as, a ham and cheese version of these Spanish omelets. Delicious!

Metro Bistro Metro Bistro

Temple de Debod – AH-mazing! This is not a tourist spot and we struggled to get a menu in English, but it was the best meal we had in Madrid! Get the ceviche and the croquettes!

*TIP- Try the ceviche – best we’ve ever had!

Grazie Milla Grazie Milli

This Italian eatery is right around the corner from Plaza Mayor. And while we would normally avoid a spot so close to a major tourist attraction, we were craving some Italian food and this hit the spot! We had a great artichoke pizza and pear and cream cheese chalets.

*TIP- Try the pear and cheese chalets – sounds weird, tastes amazing!

Meson del Champinon

This is literally called the House of Mushrooms so here is a tip… Get the effing mushrooms! They are garlicy little pops of deliciousness. The décor is a must see, with fungi on the ceiling and a very cave-like ambiance.

*TIP -Watch how the locals eat the fantastic mushrooms with 2 toothpicks!

Casa del AbueloGambas & Bread

Have the gambas al ajillo here – and then don’t bother having them anywhere else. Shrimp covered in butter and garlic with warm crusty bread, what more could you need in life?!

*TIP- Throw your used napkins in the trough on the floor if you want to feel like a local. It sounds insane, but trust me all the cool kids are doing it.

Churros

**Disclaimer** – Churros in Spain are not the traditional Mexican churros we Americans were used to. They are dense and doughier than we expected and not covered in cinnamon and sugar. Darn. But those dipping sauces, they sure do make up for it.

Chocolaterias Valor Churro de Valor

A perfect solution to satisfy everyone in your group – churros and a chocolate sampler.  Milk, dark, white, and cappuccino chocolate dipping sauces pleases every palate!

Churros 1

Chocolaterias San Gines

This is tucked away on a side street off the Plaza del Sol and is the quintessential churro spot in Madrid. Great atmosphere, order inside and then find a table outside in the street. The waiter will bring your order out to you.

Drinks

La Tita Rivera

This is an adorable hipster spot – it looks small from the outside but don’t be fooled, it has a large dine in area and a great back terrace. Definitely try to sit outside for drinks – you will feel like you are at a cool and cozy backyard party.

Loved our seat under a tree canopy!

Fabrica Maravillas Beer

This is a brewery – small with a modern urban design. They have about 5 beers on tap and more in bottles.

*TIP-Don’t forget to add your coin in the wall!

Cafe de la Luz madrid

A cozy bar full of mixed matched tables, chairs and couches. It’s like having a drink at Grandma’s…. if your Grandma is cool AF! Great drink menu and food as well.
